Heating your house with diesel oil? Many European countries make widespread use of this fuel for their heating systems and hot water. New designs are increasingly environmentally-friendly, safer and more competitive than other more popular systems. Take a look at the possibilities that this fuel can offer you.
In reality, it is just a change of state. As with heating systems that are powered by gas (propane, butane or natural gas), heating oil installations also require a boiler and radiators. Thereafter, the differences with other systems increase and, perhaps, the most significant is the fact that the property or group of properties must install a tank to store the liquid.
These tanks, which are not very different from the cylinders on lorries which transport petrol or gas, can be installed both inside or outside the building, but always by qualified professionals using officially approved models. On the one hand, the regulations state that the tanks must be located away from heat sources such as the boiler itself. On the other hand, if it is installed outside, there are practically no restrictions, except for respecting certain stipulated distances between walls made of wood and other materials.
Safer, cheaper maintenance
It must also be borne in mind that the safety checks for heating oil systems are less frequent and simpler than for other installations. Manufacturers and suppliers establish recommendations in this area, depending on the model, but modern research and development has led to the emergence of diesel oils which can retain optimum conditions in the tanks for long periods of time.
Furthermore, the stability of diesel oil means that its installation does not require additional safety controls: gas detection system, forced ventilation and electrical antideflagrant systems… Since they need fewer safety controls, the basic installation cost of a diesel oil heating system is lower, also helped by the fact that the required boilers and burners are cheaper than those used by other systems. Furthermore, the user of this system will not have to assume any additional cost for meter rental or connection fees.
Technological progress where domestic diesel oil is concerned has also meant that this fuel reaches performance levels of 100%. Whether or not it reaches the maximum, its calorific efficiency is higher than that of other systems which are more commonly used in Spain. As such, if you are thinking about changing your heating and hot water system, why not give it a chance?
