Valentino Rossi got a valuable victory at Laguna Seca after a race marked by his duel with Casey Stoner. Towards the end of the race the Australian Ducati rider made a mistake and this handed the victory to Rossi on a plate. Vermeulen was third. The Repsol Honda rider Nicky Hayden finished fifth, and Lorenzo had a spectacular fall on the first lap fracturing a finger.

The Repsol Honda rider Nicky Hayden made a great start and was on Stoner`s rear wheel after overtaking Rossi. However before the end of the first lap Valentino was leading the race ahead of the Ducati rider. On the eighth lap Rossi and Stoner had a lead of almost eight seconds over the chasing group made up of Hayden, Vermeulen and Dovizioso. After the opening manoeuvres Valentino and Stoner overtook each other several times but in the end it was Rossi who won the battle and Stoner had no choice but to follow the Italian`s rear wheel.

On the 24th lap Stoner made a mistake on a left-hander and went into the gravel, he fell. But the Australian got back on his bike and rejoined the race in second position thanks to the big lead he had over Vermeulen. Stoner`s mistake left Rossi alone at the front and he went on to win the GP at Laguna Seca, ending the sensational run of results achieved by Stoner over the last few weeks.
