MaaS (Mobility as a Service)

Mobility of the future

Mobility is evolving rapidly thanks to new technologies, transforming the way we get around. More and more people are opting for shared vehicles, an alternative that allows paying only for time of use and eliminates the fixed maintenance costs associated with car ownership.

In this context, the concept of "Mobility as a Service" (MaaS) emerges, which integrates various modes of transport into a single platform accessible via the Internet. These services not only offer a convenient and safe experience, but also adapt to the changing needs of users, promoting more efficient and sustainable mobility in our cities.

What is MaaS or “mobility as a service”?

MaaS is the acronym for "Mobility as a Service". A new concept in the field of urban mobility that seeks to integrate various means of transport into a service accessible through a single platform or mobile application.

In this way, MaaS users have access to a variety of options that perfectly complement their own vehicle, from public transport to shared mobility options such as scooters, bicycles, and motorcycles.

Benefits of mobility as a service

For users

  • Convenience and ease of use. Users can plan and book travel through a single platform, simplifying the process and reducing the time and effort spent on managing tickets and fares.
  • Access to multiple transport options. It allows you to choose the most convenient means of transport at any given time, including buses, trains, bike sharing, car rentals, and shared transport services.
  • Customization and convenience. It provides real-time information on availability, timetables, and traffic conditions, as well as personalized recommendations based on user preferences, enhancing the experience.
  • Cost savings. Users can opt for the most economic mode of transport for each trip, such as public transport or carpooling.

For cities

  • Reduction of traffic congestion. It promotes the use of shared and public transport, which can reduce the number of vehicles on the streets. This means less need for parking and more space for other urban uses.
  • Improvement in transport efficiency. The data generated by MaaS can help authorities better plan and manage transport infrastructure.
  • Promotion of sustainable mobility. The possibility of choosing between different mobility options could reduce the number of cars on the road, which contributes to reducing emissions.
  • Boosts the local economy. The new mobility services can generate employment in sectors such as technology, transport management, and fleet maintenance.

Types of MaaS

MaaS based on public transport

It mainly integrates public transport services, such as buses, trains, and trams, into a single platform. Users can plan their journeys, buy tickets, and receive information in real time.

Multimodal MaaS

It includes multiple methods of transport, such as public transport, bike sharing, cars rentals, shared transport services, and motorcycles. This model offers greater flexibility and options to users.

MaaS based on subscription

This type of MaaS offers transport services under a monthly or annual subscription model. Users pay a fixed rate to access various means of transport without having to worry about the costs of each journey.

Shared mobility MaaS

It focuses on shared mobility services, such as carpooling and carsharing. This model seeks to maximize the efficiency of vehicles and reduce the amount of cars on the road.

Corporate MaaS

Designed for companies and their employees, it offers transport solutions that optimize work and business trips. It can include services such as shared transport for employees, corporate car rental, and shared bicycles at the workplace.

MaaS based on technological platforms

It uses advanced technological platforms and real-time data to integrate and manage transport services. This type of MaaS focuses on the optimization and efficiency of the mobility system as a whole.

MaaS for tourism

Focused on offering tourists an easy and convenient way of moving around a city or region. It integrates services such as public transport, bicycle rental, cars, and access to tourist attractions.

Rural MaaS

Adapted to rural areas where population density is low and public transport is limited. It usually integrates low-demand and shared transport services to meet the mobility needs of these areas.

What does MaaS represent for the transport sector?

mobility as a service

At Repsol, we are committed to the transformation of the mobility sector, promoting innovative and sustainable solutions. Making the most of our extensive network of service stations and our strong strategic alliances, we are integrating our energy services with MaaS platforms. This initiative seeks to improve accessibility and convenience for users, while it contributes to our aim of achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2050.

A tangible example of this commitment is our collaboration with Wible, a carsharing service that operates in Madrid. Wible vehicles can be charged at our service stations, facilitating the integration of shared mobility with our energy infrastructure.

Our commitment to MaaS goes beyond carsharing. We also take part in other initiatives, such as renting, in collaboration with companies such as Alphabet and MasQRenting. These partnerships increase the sustainable transport options for users, offering efficient electric mobility solutions and other renting alternatives.
