We combine safety and circularity in the Repsol Reciclex® valve guard for our LPG cylinder, incorporating 10% recycled materials

Chemical News 20/06/2024

The valve guard, designed to meet all high standards of quality and mechanical properties, is a safety piece that protects the bottle's valve. Incorporating 10% recycled material reduces the piece's carbon footprint by 6% compared to virgin material. This initiative is part of our commitment to developing solutions that contribute to the circular economy by using recycled materials in our products.

We launched a new valve protector for our LPG cylinder made with polypropylene from the Repsol Reciclex® range, which includes mechanical recycled content. The valve guard is a safety piece that protects the bottle valve and requires high standards of quality and mechanical properties. Thus, the project required close collaboration between Repsol's LPG and Chemical businesses, taking advantage of the former's experience in the valve's technical specifications and the latter's knowledge and understanding of advanced materials and offering adapted solutions to help our clients advance in their sustainability commitments.

The new valve guard contributes to our sustainability and decarbonization commitments by incorporating 10% recycled material, reducing the carbon footprint generated in the manufacturing of these parts by 6%. This is an important milestone since the incorporation of this type of material while maintaining high standards of quality and mechanical properties represents a high-level technical challenge that we have undertaken to promote the use of recycled materials in our products whenever possible.

Producing the valve protector in our corporate blue represented a tremendous technical challenge, so incorporating recycled material would not alter the color. To do this, we have selected specific flows through our alliance with the recycler Acteco to obtain a ready-to-use colored compound.

Through this project, starting in mid-2024, all new bottles included in our LPG cylinder pool will incorporate this new valve guard.

"This project is an excellent example of how, through collaboration, it is possible to find circular solutions for technical parts with strict safety requirements," says Pablo Giner, Polyolefin Sales Director at Repsol Chemical business.

This initiative reaffirms our commitment to safety by prioritizing risk management across its entire value chain.
