Repsol Reciclex®, a benchmark in circular economy

At Repsol we continue to advance in support of our goal to be a net zero emissions company by 2050. This is why we have developed our Repsol Reciclex® product range, which supports our customers in their sustainability objectives in a comprehensive manner and encompasses all our materials.

We offer three types of solutions to support each project in a personalized way:

Mechanical recycling solutions

We incorporate recycled plastics in all types of applications, opening new markets for plastic waste and promoting circularity through the reuse of these wastes by mechanically recycling them. This way, we also manage to reduce the carbon footprint of these materials. Our wide range of ready-to-use compounds, with recycled content of up to 85%, and our recycled plastics have more than 40 grades that offer high-quality performance and properties similar to our virgin range in many of our non-food applications. In addition, these solutions are Recyclass certified.

Chemical recycling solutions

Our circular polyolefins are obtained by incorporating pyrolysis oil from chemically recycled plastic waste into our petrochemical process. This process reduces the use of non-renewable resources and results in polyolefins with the same properties and quality as virgin material, meeting the standards suitable for sensitive applications such as food contact, cosmetics, or pharmaceutical applications.

We also supply circular styrene for applications with high cleanliness and safety requirements, such as pharmaceuticals, construction, automotive, and toys. To obtain it, we use pyrolysis oil in our processes, in this case from end-of-life tires.

Both products are traceable and ISCC PLUS certified by mass balance.

In 2020, we obtained ISCC Plus certification for all our complexes for the production of polyolefins and other circular petrochemical products, becoming the first Spanish company to do so.

We also have Repsol Reciclex® polyol, which is used to manufacture polyurethane, the main material used in the manufacture of flexible foams used in bedding applications. Circular polyol also helps to reduce the carbon footprint by 20-30% compared to a fossil-based polyol. Our circular polyol is the first of non-fossil origin in the iberian peninsula, which places us as pioneers in Europe in polyurethane recycling. In addition, we have set ourselves the target that 15% of the portfolio of polyols marketed will be circular.

Bio-circular solutions

Finally, we offer a full range of Repsol Reciclex® bio-based polyolefin products that are also ISCC Plus certified by mass balance. Our sustainable grades include second-generation circular polyolefins based on renewable waste (2G). This range is suitable for sensitive and technical applications. These bio-based polyolefins offer a negative carbon footprint according to the cradle-to-gate methodology, removing more CO2 from the atmosphere than the emissions generated in the supply chain processes.

Our goal is to promote the circular economy and we have set ourselves the target that by 2030, 10% of our polyolefin production will be of organic or circular origin.

We also have bio-circular styrene by using pyrolysis oil from post-consumer tires in our processes, which provides carbon footprint savings of up to 50%.
